I feel I must apologize for these photos. Whenever people mock fashion blogging I always tell them they should give it a go because it isn't as easy as one would think to stand in front of a camera and pose. Especially when you feel out of practice. And are having a weird face day. Also the lighting in my room is crap. Ignore the pictures, revel in the awesomeness of my trousers.
I know, I decry pants all the time and now I've gone and made me a pair? Well here's the deal. I actually do like pants. They are practical for some things. I am of the personal belief that you can do anything in a skirt that you can do in trousers (and most of human history seems to agree with me...) but on occasion It's nice to toss on a pair. I have a pair of jeans, a pair of capri jeans, and two pair jean shorts. Otherwise I am pant-less. I wear my jeans fairly regularly and pretty much lived in my shorts this summer. I'm just not that big of a fan of the way pants fit me. But I have always wanted a pair of wide leg trousers ala Katherine Hepburn (one of my fashion icons). So after years of fruitless searching, I decided to just make a pair.
I used Simplicity 3688. I had to size way down again. I really love this pattern but the sizing in crazy. I don't know what they were smoking when they sized these things. But it was an absolute dream of a pattern to work with. I think overall it took probably 3-4 hours to put them together. I did spread it out over a couple of weeks (I am seriously back logged on sewing projects), but they were super simple to put together. I was kind of nervous about making pants because I've always heard how difficult they are to make, but I was pleasantly surprised. Not a single hitch in whipping these up! I have some brown tweedy fabric that I'm thinking about making these up in, as well as some denim. These are some navy linen I had leftover from a skirt I made earlier this year. The great thing about them is that they are lightweight enough to wear for the rest of summer, but thick enough to layer come fall and winter. They are awesome. These babies will be getting quite a bit of wear. Another thing I am excited about is that normally I am terribly self conscious about tucking shirts into pants, but with these, they actually look pretty weird with un-tucked shirts. Trousers that help cure self consciousness? I am a fan.
This blouse is actually a few months old, but every time I wear it I forget to take photos. I really love it! It's the short sleeved version of Colette's Violet blouse. I have a few more of these tops planned too! Love them! On the next ones I think I'll add a bit more ease to the sleeves as theses ones are a bit constricting. The collar of this one is a bit weird because i tried to get all fancy and scallop the collar AND add piping to it.... Don't try this. It doesn't work. But the overall effect ended up being kinda cool, a little more 30's than 60's. I've got a ton of wear out of it and am quite pleased with the way it turned out!
Those are great! Very chic. KH would approve.
ReplyDeleteThose pants are perfect! I have Simplicity 3688 too but haven't used it yet, so it's good to know about the crazy sizing (but I kind of expect that with Simplicity). Yours look lovely! I LOVE the blouse, too - so very 1930s!
ReplyDeleteI love this outfit! I am interested in sewing the Colette blouse...did you purchase the pattern online? I ive in Southern California as well; did you by any chance find the pattern at a local retailer?
